Does your car’s transmission need a repair? Unfortunately for most drivers, understanding when it’s time for a transmission repair can be difficult. There are a number of important signs of a transmission problem that all drivers should learn to recognize. Here’s how to figure out if you have a transmission problem on your hands.
1. Lagging while accelerating.
The most subtle sign is when the transmission seems to hesitate before kicking into action when you’re driving. This occurs when you put your foot on the gas pedal and the engine revs without the usual increase in speed. It may also take the form of a lag between the moment you push the gas pedal and the moment the vehicle speeds up. Of course, this can also happen when it’s cold outside.
2. Slipping out of gear.
If you drive a manual transmission, you might notice that moving the gear shift between gears is more difficult than usual. In an automatic car, the reverse gear may stop working or the engine may roar, indicating that the vehicle has slipped out of gear.
3. Not-so-good vibrations.
While operating your vehicle in an improper way can cause a shaky drive, so can a failing transmission. If you notice a wobbly, shaking, or vibrating sensation while driving, it may be a transmission issue. Most of the time, this will happen on one specific speed or a speed range. This can be a sign that the transmission needs to be replaced or a component of the transmission needs attention or replacement.
4. A warming light.
This goes without saying, but you might be surprised how many people ignore the electronic lights when they come on. Most modern-day vehicles have warning lights to indicate transmission problems. If a light which shows a symbol with the letters “O/D” is flashing, it could be the vehicle’s internal diagnostic system. In addition, a “Check Engine” light can also mean that you have a transmission problem on your hands. If you have a code reader, P07000 is an indicator of an issue with the transmission.
5. Clunking, grinding, or thumping noises.
Your transmission works when you switch between gears. If you hear strange noises, such as clunking or thumping when your car shifts gears, it’s a definite sign of a transmission problem. On a manual transmission, hearing grinding when you’re shifting gears yourself can be a sign of a problem with the clutch.
6. A burning or unusual smell.
Your transmission operates at a high temperature. Without the correct amount of fluid to lubricate it, it can easily overheat and fail. If you are running low on transmission fluid, you will most likely notice an odd, slightly chemical or burning smell when the car is running.
7. Puddles of fluid under the car.
Transmission fluid is a must for a car to operate properly. If you have a leak in a gasket, seal, or hose, brown, pink, or dark red fluid may appear beneath your vehicle. Change your transmission fluid regularly to avoid these kinds of issues.
