Chocolate is a type of food that is made from cocoa. Combined with a fat, such as cocoa butter and sugar, it’s a sweet treat. Chocolate is classified according to what percentage of cocoa is used in it.
Common types of chocolates include:
- Organic chocolate. Certified organic chocolate is made from all-organic ingredients.
- Raw chocolate. To be considered raw chocolate, the ingredients cannot be processed, heated, or mixed with additives. This type of chocolate is mostly sold in countries where cocoa is grown.
- Unsweetened chocolate. When sugar isn’t added to cocoa, chocolate is unsweetened. This type of chocolate may also be called baking chocolate, bitter chocolate, or cooking chocolate. It is only mixed with fat and retains the strong, bitter, and deep flavor of the cocoa beans.
- Dark chocolate. Dark chocolate includes three ingredients: sugar, fat, and cocoa. Unlike milk chocolate, it usually doesn’t contain milk and if it does contain milk, it includes a lesser quantity. Dark chocolate is also darker in appearance than milk chocolate. It may be marked according to the percentage of cocoa. Dark chocolate usually ranges from 70-99% cocoa. Lindt, Ghirardelli, and Godiva are all popular dark chocolate brands.
- Milk chocolate. This is the most popular type of chocolate sold in the United States. It’s made with some type of milk, for instance liquid milk, condensed milk, or milk powder. Milk chocolate is most often used to make chocolate bars. Popular international brands of milk chocolate include Hershey’s, Nestlé, Cadbury, Ferrero Rocher, and Guylian. Some popular chocolate bars include Mars, KitKat, Snickers, Oh Henry, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, Butterfinger, and Twix.
- White chocolate. White chocolate is made from sugar, milk, and cocoa butter but not solid cocoa. It is white in color.

Candies are another popular type of sweet. Candies come in many different kinds. The following are some of the most popular types of candy in the United States:
- Lollipops and suckers. Lollipops and suckers generally include hard candy that is mounted on a stick, making it possible to hold the stick while you lick the candy. Lollipops and suckers are available in every kind of flavor you can imagine. They also come in many colors, shapes, and sizes.

- Bubblegum. Bubblegum is a type of sweet that is meant to be chewed but not swallowed. Some popular flavors of bubblegum include mint and fruit flavors. Popular brands include Trident and Dentene.
